Autozone is the American largest retailer of aftermarket automotive parts and accessories. It was established in July 4, 1979 in Forrest City, Arkansas, United States as Auto Shack. Autozone Headquarters is located in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. Pitt Hyde is the founder of the company. The company has over 6,400 stores in the United States, Brazil, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands. William C. Rhodes is the Chairman of the company and William T. Giles is the Chief financial officer of the company.
On July 4, 1979, the first store opened under the name of Auto Shack in Forrest City, Arkansas. The first sale on that day was around $300. Doc Crain was the first Store’s mananger on that time. In 1981, the company’s total stores was 73 in 7 States. Later, they expaned their business and they opened new stores. In the year 1984, Company’s total stores are around 194 in 13 states. And in the same year in 1984, they became the first auto parts retailer to create a quality control program for its parts.
In 1987, the company offcially changed their name from Auto Shack to AutoZone. They introduced WITT-JR, an electronic catalog, which is helpful to look up parts and keep warranty information. At that time, total stores were 459 in 16 different states. In 1991, Autozone Stock started trading $27.50 per share in the NYSE i.e. New York Stock Exchange with ticker symbol named “AZO”.
